Small caps, italics, a caption cut and the text face. (On occasion of my grandmother’s funeral.)

Due to the nature of the idea (I have described it as “drawing the edges separately”), some of the things typically defined prior to drawing – such as weight progression and stress angle – are not really set. I have a clear idea of the detailing and the tension of dynamic against static curves, but the rest feels like I am molding clay. With a text face, there are some ground rules. With a display face, I can do almost whatever I want.

I gathered some type friends to give me a little input on the exhibition. Rightly so, they pointed out that I had strayed far from the original sketches in my quest for a functional text face. (And that is definitely necessary – there is a very narrow room to navigate drawing new and usable text faces that doesn’t attract attention to themselves.) With that in mind, I have taken some steps backwards and revisited drawings for a more literal interpretation of the concept. It may become a useful display companion. It may also not.
